"On the Come UP" is a bi-weekly series that will highlight and amplify the achievements of the Young & Driven under 25 years of age.

The series will bring to you in-depth and exclusive interviews of those that aren't waiting to get tomorrow what they can start getting NOW. Of course young achiever testimonies, are prime content for Urban Professor, "The Voice of the Young & Driven." Read on below...

Name: Austin Miller

Brand Affiliation: ICED Media, Music Producer

Job Title: Junior Project Manager

Age: 22

UP: Austin what’s going on, we want to thank you for taking the time to do this feature with us here at Urban Professor. So tell us, what are your current titles? How do you label yourself?

Austin: I am currently a Junior Project Manager at ICED Media, which is an Integrated Marketing Company. At ICED Media I use the online space to fit client’s needs, working on projects for companies such as CNN, Swatch, Polo and music artists such as Tyrese, etc. I lead artists and companies in their online initiatives. I also handle client’s social media assets as well as site and blogger outreach to distribute content. I am also a Music Producer. I label myself as an insightful visionary that works on cultivating a culture and providing positivity through various outlets. As if that’s not enough, I also handle the online and social media aspects of the ADCOLOR Awards, which an annual award and industry conference that showcases achievement amongst diversity in the advertising field.

UP: Very interesting, seems like you wear some dynamic titles. Looking into what propelled you to follow these interests, what’s the motivating factor that drove you into this industry?

Austin: The motivating factor that drove me to this industry was creativity. Creativity was something I believed in. I majored in journalism in College, so writing was an outlet to express my thoughts. Advertising and marketing is a way to compel my thoughts and execute them into action. In this business creativity allows me to portray my individuality and use it for a good cause.

UP: Positivity is very key in remaining grounded in our society, we feel like it is something that gets lost in the rat race. In regards to the grind, what was your first job out of college?

Austin: My first job out of college is my current job now. I feel blessed to have my first job at a company where I can flourish and utilize my talents. I have done years at internships from record labels like Universal, and Island Def Jam to the lifestyle agency/magazine Cornerstone/Fader Magazine.

UP: Seems like you’re on the right track pertaining to knowing what you want to do. For those reading this, what could someone do right now to further pursue their dream career immediately?

Austin: I say go for your goals! Do not let anybody stop you from following your dreams. I’ve done years of internships and free labor to get to the position I am right now. If you feel the position you are in is stagnant and you are not moving anywhere, keep believing. As long as your heart is in it, there will be a good outcome. I don’t want to sound cliché, but sometimes people need to take heed to clichés. So with that said, “Patience is a virtue”. Success doesn’t come overnight, and if you work on laying down the soil right, your end product can be the result you want.

UP: Patience is indeed a virtue. As they say, “Anything worth having is worth waiting for.” But, real talk though; what was the last thing that you purchased because you got tired of waiting?

Austin: My last purchase that I got tired of waiting for were my Beats by Dre headphones. I use them on a daily basis and music helps me get through the day, not to mention the Dre beats have great sound quality.

UP: Can you tell the readers how has being a minority affected your career pursuits?

Austin: As the years progress I feel as though this term is being used less as well as the triviality of this statement. I use my background as a stepping-stone and a marker to go harder for my goals. My advice is to turn this disadvantage to an advantage, and let our culture benefit your surroundings and the masses.

UP: On that same coin, what’s the best advice you’ve received in the last few years?

Austin: When you come across people who are out for your best interests and are a legend in this industry, it’s a great thing. I was lucky to have a mentor by the name of Sean C. who is a recognized figure in this game. He discovered my talents and showed me the ropes of the industry and how it works, and helped me get my foot in the door. He once told me I had the millionaire mind state, after I was staying up all night doing a paper during my college tenure that stuck with me. Just being told that, further solidified to me to keep on grinding and with dedication you can get to your goals. That quote has always stuck by me.

UP: Millionaire mind state, we like that. Looking back, what would you have done differently in regards to education to help your career now?

Austin: I wouldn’t have done anything different in my education. My 4 years at the institution of Penn State University built my foundation for knowledge and leadership. From my classes to the organizations I have been a part of, my experience there helped facilitate my thought planning now.

UP: Even with this strong foundation, what are some of the biggest challenges you face regularly?

Austin: One of the biggest challenges I face regularly is time management. From, when I’m sending out pitches for clients or whether I’m sending out tracks to artists. I always think to myself what work I should divide my time into. Sleep is something that I barely get nowadays. I don’t pride myself in that, however I realized to be on top of your game, you have to grind ‘til the sun comes up. If somebody like Diddy is always up hustling and thinking about a new plan, and he’s on the Forbes list every year. What makes you think a person like you who is trying to achieve great things shouldn’t be doing the same? Those are questions that I ask, motivating myself to achieve these goals.

No Sleep till Billion

UP: All this talk of hustling has us getting real hype right now, what music track(s) are on your iPod “Hustle” playlist, we know you one?

Austin: Yes, it’s always good to have some motivational music to start your day, or to spark an idea. On my Hustle playlist I definitely have Kendrick Lamar’s Section 80 and I’ll take it back a few years with Clipse’s Lord Willin. These are both a perfect balance to fuel my hustler ambition. Also I always have to have Hov, Kanye and Ross in the playlist to have the Hustle playlist complete.

UP: Definitely, we’ve learned through conversations with people and mentors that the hustle never really stops. It’s really humbling and inspiring at the same time. What’s the most inspiring or influential book you’ve read and why?

Austin: The most influential book I’ve read so far would have to be “48 Laws of Power” by Robert Greene. I’m sure many people have heard of this book. It’s the self-empowerment that the book provides which makes it such a good read. It lays out all the proper laws for you to succeed. It is not going to make you a success overnight. You have to actually apply the laws and take action in your real life to see success.

48 Laws of Power by Robert Greene

UP: It’s interesting how Greene utilizes examples from ancient history that are still applicable today. Drop a nugget. What’s something that you want to put the Urban Professor audience on to? And are there any blogs, websites, up and coming artists, technology innovations, clothing brands, etc. we should know about?

Austin: The future. We are a new generation of money getters. In this new age, culture branding is something that is prominent in success. There are a lot of movements and new hustles that are having light shed on them and this is only the beginning. Technology is allowing us to go places and do things we have never did. It’s a great thing when you can live to work and not work to live. When you do what you love and can find a way to get paid off of it, that is a gift. Monetize your interests. In this industry now, a lot of people feel like they are a part of it, with social networks and the way people can communicate with artists and peers. However, real success is built off of real relationships. You can be at the party, but who sits at the dinner table? Turn your reality into a salary.

Here are a few things you should look out for. In terms of personal projects, I am proud to have my debut instrumental project dropping in the top of 2012. Be on the lookout for that. It will be an instrumental journey through my mind, lifestyle and vision. I have a couple of major projects coming out with some dope artists soon. I’m always perfecting my music craft so look to see more of my productions out there. Also, I will continue to be behind the scenes helping companies, blogs, and artists with their initiatives in the online space with marketing and branding. You can follow me on twitter @AustinMillz. I have my hands in a lot of great endeavors so stay tuned and look for the name Austin Miller/Austin Millz. It’s Miller Time!

Thanks and U DEFINE SUCCESS…

Name: Lorenzo Robinson

Brand Affiliation: TheLo-key.com

Job Title: Founder/CEO

Age: 22

UP: Lorenzo, firstly let us thank you for taking the time out to participate in our exclusive feature series here at UP. So tell us, what’s your current role?

Lo: “I am currently the Founder/CEO of TheLo-key.com, a young adult lifestyle based website recently re-released.

UP: Dope, naturally we’re sure that carries a lot of responsibility. What drove you in this direction, why the multimedia industry?

Lo: I have a strong passion for connecting with others. I genuinely love to entertain people and make them laugh, which are key elements to connecting with people. While growing up I was privileged to be exposed to many successful young adults who grew up in similar living situations, but were driven enough to push past the statistics. I then realized the key to helping others is to simply be relatable. Whether it is through radio/television, print or just a simple conversation. My first thought was that the best way to intertwine all of those areas of media was via the Internet. So I decided to take the entrepreneurial route and create the Wal-Mart for a young adult lifestyle… TheLokey.com

UP: So safe to say that your “boss move” is being a college students Sam Walton of entertainment, the one stop shop for all things entertaining for young adults?

Lo: You can say that, I just like to entertain and expose others to the opportunities I have been blessed with.

UP: The Internet is amazing for how it brings all these forms of communication to one resource. I know you’ve told us before that you have marketing experience, so what was your first legitimate gig in the industry?

Lo: I initially came on with clear channel radio as a marketing promotions intern, later I was hired on as a remote technician.

UP: So media communications has always been a part of the repertoire, what are your thoughts on higher education? Do you think college is necessary for someone trying to accomplish similar goals to yours?

Lo: This is a question that I have been going back and forth with myself for a while now. I feel that college is a necessary evil, but nevertheless the experience and networking opportunities were priceless. So I guess I would say yes.

UP: Interesting that you feel college is a necessary evil, and we’ll be honest, we feel that quite a bit of what is taught in college is antiquated and doesn’t adequately prepare emerging professionals. So if you were President Yung Lo at a college for a day, what would you implement to make college more desirable and relevant?

Lo: I would definitely implement more entrepreneurial programs starting with your sophomore year. It seems like most colleges teach you how to go work for other people…. What about the students who want to make their teachers work for them?

I would also implement programs that promote individuality. These programs will allow students the opportunity to combine their natural talents, with the things they love and create their own career path. This way, students won’t end up taking pointless classes for 4 to 5 years of their life and be forced to work a job that they don’t really care to be at just to pay off student loans.

UP: Every one we’ve spoken to whether it is academic or professional, always stresses networking as a main strength of attending college. For our readers chasing a dream, what’s some advice you have to help them execute?

Lo: I’d say identify exactly what that dream is, then create a process, and invest in yourself and others everyday. A lot of times, we have great ideas but leave them as just that “an idea.” Once you create a process and set goals, I believe anything can be attainable.

UP: The follow up is key; we think that’s what separates dreamers and “doers.” But it takes a certain spark to get out and do. When was the last time you’ve been inspired?

Lo: Actually it was A few weeks ago, when I read the last Urban Professor “On the Come Up” series featuring Rhonesha Byng. To see someone my age as committed and persistent in pursuing her own dreams as an entrepreneur, definitely set a fire to grind even harder.

UP: Positive peer pressure. It was a pleasure working with Rhonesha, sure it’ll motivate her to know she’s influencing her peers. Rhonesha and achievers like you will make just about anyone have to take inventory of their grind. What’s some great advice you’ve received recently that you think is worth sharing?

Lo: A few years ago Tony Forte (The Urban Professor) told me to “stomach my dreams.” When you stomach your dreams, you’re willing to do whatever it takes to make your dreams come to reality. All good things come with sacrifices.

UP: Yeah, Tony just recently spoke about stomaching your dream at the “A Driven World” campus tour going on now.

UP: Speaking of sacrifice, what’s another challenge you find yourself met with?

Lo: Fear. Fear by far may be the biggest bully alive. The fear of failing generally holds people back from stepping out their comfort zone and trying to achieve that dream that seems so far fetched. Every morning when I wake up I pray my fear away and then go on with my day.

UP: Hopefully you don’t have any fear in doing this feature. If you had a favorite song that amped you up to get out of your comfort zone, what would it be?

Lo: You know I am from Atlanta so all T.I. songs turn me up. It’s something about watching someone who came from the same area (West Atlanta) as you and make it to the top, that gets me hype about my future.

“She Will” by Lil Wayne ft. Drake does it too. I feel like that song accurately describes the life of me and my team.

UP: Success is good for confidence, but failure is a great teacher. What have you learned from failure?

Lo: I have a love/hate relationship with failure. I hate her but she’s taught me a lot. “Hard work beats talent when talent doesn’t work hard,” My first time failing taught me that I had to work extremely hard to strengthen my skill sets to even be considered a factor out in this cruel world.

I also learned that if you’re afraid of failure then ultimately you are afraid of success… The worst thing that can happen if you take a risk is that you fail, but that’s it. You will still be alive and in perfect health. Just a little bit wiser and more prepared for the next opportunity.

UP: Definitely, when trying to do something that has not been accomplished, fear is going to be natural because there is no precedent. We just have to push it to the back of our minds. Tell me Lo, what’s the most influential book you’ve read?

Lo: The Alchemist by Paulo Coehlo. This fable just explains how life is a journey and everything happens for a reason. It is up to us to acknowledge that and press on to live out our purpose. I had a hard time figuring out why certain things happened until I read this book. We often times become discouraged when unexpected bumps come throughout our odyssey, instead of using these experiences as fuel to persevere.

UP: “The Alchemist” stays on our ever-growing recommended reading list. How do U Define Success?

Lo: Simply setting goals and achieving them.

UP: What’s an inspirational quote that you live by?

Lo: “Things are not a problem unless you acknowledge them as one.” A lot of times we end up making a big deal out of the small things in life, instead of just taking everything as a learning experience and continuing to persevere throughout our lives. “Being realistic is the most commonly traveled road to mediocrity ” – Will Smith. If everyone were being “realistic” then we all would end up following the status quo instead of creating it.

UP: So, now were really curious, with as many quotes, books, and insights that you know, you have to tell us what you do to relax and enjoy? You are the collegiate entertainment king aren’t you?

Lo: I wouldn’t just say collegiate because I am about to graduate in a few months. However, I do throw events as well as work with radio stations which is something I love, so it never really feels like work. I also help direct my close friend Zach Boog’s comedy blogs that he displays on youtube and WSHH. We’re currently on a Shut Up and Listen College Tour that’s powered by Dj Crisis, RockSmith Clothing, Lotus energy drink, and Cuestions Tequila which is quite relaxing I must say lol.

I know a lot of things I’m saying sounds like jobs but to us it’s really just having fun with the intent of eventually getting paid to do it.

I also like to go to Atlanta Falcon games and tailgate with my family and friends.

Click here for tour kick-off video

UP: Any last words or endeavors you want the UP audience to check out?

Lo: Just think about the ideal male or female you would like to talk to, generally they’re entertaining, fashionably sound, smart, funny and ambitious… well that demographic drives TheLo-key.com all in one so make sure y’all check us out and follow us on twitter @_TheLokey U DEFINE SUCCESS

UP: Okay so it’s safe to say that the Internet has been a significant facilitator in what you’ve accomplished thus far. Looking at your current position what can you say pushed you toward this industry?

Rhonesha: I have a passion for news and information and I am also creative. Journalism was the thing that pulled all my skills together and entrepreneurship allowed me to take all of that to the next level without any boundaries.

UP: We can see how journalism could allow you to utilize your passion for knowledge in conjunction with creative thinking. To everyone reading this what could someone do to help improve the current pursuit of his or her dreams?

Rhonesha: Network. In this day and age relationships are key. Go out and research your industry, meet people who are doing what you want to do and intern. If you can’t get an internship then start your own thing. The most important thing is to get the experience you need to put you on a level to hit the ground running as soon as you are done with school.

“Contact High” – The 101 on Networking

UP: Networking is probably the most underrated activity when it comes to career advancement. It’s much easier to gain information from someone in your desired field, and learn from their mistakes, and pull from their experiences. In your own time, how has being a minority affected your endeavors?

Rhonesha: It’s allowed me to become more aware of how amazing the opportunities I am granted, because just a few years ago, people who looked like me couldn’t be doing what I’m doing. I was able to work at a major media company at the age of 17, all because of a woman named Emma Bowen who fought for the rights of minorities in media, and in turn started a foundation to allow young people to get their foot in the door.

UP: It’s very admirable that you are so conscious of those who have paved the way for our generation. I’m sure it’s inspiring when you think about the pioneers of your industry. When was the last time you’ve been inspired, and what from?

Rhonesha: I’m lucky in that I am easily inspired, except that I find as the years add on the threshold for inspiration rises. The other day I happened to watch Beyonce’s mini documentary called “Year of 4″ about her year off and also her year working on her album. Though I don’t usually promote celebrities as role models, I love what the documentary revealed about her, and most importantly her work ethic, unapologetic leadership skills, and great ambition. She’s also very aware that because she’s a woman people don’t expect her to be a boss, and mentions this so eloquently in the film. It inspired me to continue to promote the message of HerAgenda.com, which is No one Ever Slows HER Agenda, and for all girls and women to embody that motto.

“Beyonce: Year of 4” Documentary

UP: It’s a shame that that is even a reality, women not being looked to as leaders so to speak. It’s clear you’re one of the women On the Come UP, (no pun intended) regardless of these constraints as you are a living example of your website’s motto, speaking of inspiration and being motivated, what is some great advice you’ve received recently?

Rhonesha: I’ve been lucky to receive a lot of advice over the years, but perhaps the most important piece of advice was the advice I was given as a child–the cliché phrase “you can do anything if you put your mind to it.” I absolutely think that being told this from a young age, impacted me and gave me the courage to do crazy things, like as a 16 year old reporter just starting out making phone calls to top politicians and celebs for interviews for a newspaper no one ever heard of!

UP: In this era where so much is being done for the first time, I think limiting ourselves is one of the last things we should do regardless of age or formal training. You not being afraid to reach out to those interviewees exemplifies the exact mindset we aim to highlight here at Urban Professor. The mindset of a true go-getter. In light of your drive, what are some challenges that you have to overcome on a daily basis?

Rhonesha: I suppose it’s pacing myself. I have such a clear vision, and I want to do it all right now, but building something that has impact that means something takes time. I’m also balancing being a journalist with being an entrepreneur, which at times can be helpful, but other times the two roles can butt-heads a bit.

UP: Can’t knock the hustle, but as the saying goes, “Rome wasn’t built in a day”. Along the same lines of pacing yourself, what are your thoughts on work/life balance? How do you balance them?

Rhonesha: Work life balance is important, but since I’m young I love to work. I feel like once you are passionate about what you do, about what you create, you have a burning desire to work no matter what day it is or what time it is. Lately, I’ve been trying to put myself on a stricter schedule in terms of my work hours and it’s been helpful. But many times my personal and my work life overlap, and right now where I am in my life, I am okay with that. I hate routine, it stifles my creativity, so the more random life is, I feel the more I am inspired to work and continue the momentum. While I was at school the balance would come in the form of having to take a break to do school work, and living in such close quarters with my friends, they wouldn’t allow me to just work 24/7. It is also important to have some kind of physical regimen where you are completely focused on your body, and meditation, and I practice yoga for that reason.

UP: Being that you love what you do, and are constantly working what’s your favorite app to help you through your day-to-day hustle?

Rhonesha: Hootsuite, its how I manage my social media. I can send out tweets and Facebook updates all from one dashboard, and I can schedule tweets and statuses to go out at calculated times. Social media plays a major role in what I do, because a lot of it is rooted in building a brand, and building a community, and social media channels are the best way to reach my audience.

UP: Funny, we actually rely heavily on the Hootsuite application ourselves. The reports, and scheduling ability is the highlight of this social media dashboard for us. Due to the fact that you are always on the go what’s your favorite place you’ve visited, outside of the usual hotspots?

Rhonesha: Portugal! Portugal is such an amazing place, and not many people know about it or think to visit it. When I went there I was actually living in London and went there over a bank holiday weekend. My friends and I practically had the place to ourselves. It wasn’t swarming with tourists, the weather was phenomenal and the atmosphere was just very peaceful. The people who lived there were happy optimistic people. I even took surfing lessons while I was there and learned to surf. I always try to travel and really authentically experience new places and cultures because it really opens you up to who you are, and makes you more resourceful. The world is so big, it puts things in perspective when you actually go out and experience it.

Official Portugal Tourism Website

UP: It’s definitely a goal of mine to acquire more stamps in the passport especially while I’m young. Whether you came across it professionally or in casual conversation are there any quotes that you live by?

Rhonesha: “No one Ever Slows Her Agenda.” This phrase started as an acronym for my nickname, NESHA, however now its more than that. Its a motto that simply means, don’t take no for an answer, never give up on your goals or your dreams, and don’t sacrifice your dream for someone or something that ultimately doesn’t matter.

UP: Dope, as Jay-Z said “I can’t base what I’m gonna be off of what everybody isn’t.” Only you determine your limits. Any final words, or things you want the readers to look out for?

URBAN PROFESSOR, presents “A DRIVEN WORLD,” a fresh and unapologetic lecture series that speaks to the need for students to take their career pursuits into their own hands. The 90-minute lecture tour will debut at Tennessee State University. What “A Different World” did for exposing America to college life at HBCU’s and removing the taboo of college life for a generation that would soon aspire to enroll in college at record #’s, “A DRIVEN WORLD” sets out to expose the truth on career preparation and corporate ascension for a collegiate audience that finds life post-grad all too taboo.

A DRIVEN WORLD looks to deliver an innovative and magnifying call-to-action as a lecture that resonates with and energizes collegiate students via its pop culture components and assist them on a path to define success for themselves with its unique take on career prep content and technique. U DEFINE SUCCESS
